Why we love Lake Michigan:
Get ready to cozy up in your dream home or cottage along the longest freshwater coastline in the United States, right here in Pure Michigan, when you put down roots or set up your very own seasonal escape on stunning Lake Michigan!
As the largest lake (by surface area) found entirely within one country, Lake Michigan is as vast and expansive as it is breathtaking. Covering over 22,400 square miles and 14,336,000 acres with a maximum depth of 925 feet, it’s also the second largest of the Great Lakes (by volume) and the third largest (by surface area), stretching as far as the eye can see and spanning nearly the size of West Virginia.
Joined to Lake Huron by the Straits of Mackinac, this breathtaking body of water is sometimes called Michigan-Huron (or Huron-Michigan), and is the only one of our Great Lakes contained entirely within our scenic Pure Michigan boundaries (our other Great Lakes are shared with our Canadian neighbors).
On Lake Michigan, luxe lakeshore living is part of the everyday dream of waterfront home ownership. Often referred to as the United States’ “Third Coast” (only following the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans!) Lake Michigan boasts soft, off-white sandy beaches, glittering with natural quartz.
Along Lake Michigan’s western and northeastern beaches, you’ll find rockier beaches, while on its southern and eastern beaches you’ll find sandy, dune-covered coast. From lush green beach grass to savannas and sand dunes, you’ll find plenty of natural eye-candy along Lake Michigan (if you can stop staring at the sweeping views, striking sunsets, and pure blue waters, that is!)
Planning on dropping a line in? Here, you’ll find various species of Salmon, Whitefish, Trout, and Walleye, along with Steelhead, Perch, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, and more. Pair all of that fine fishery with slow-moving waters reaching into the 60s and 70s in July and August, and you’ve got the recipe for the perfect Pure Michigan summer (and an ideal year-round retreat!)
